How to Install Aluminum Railing

The process of installing aluminum deck railings is fairly straightforward as long as you follow the crucial steps in the right order. Today, we will go over the five necessary steps of this installation, but before that, you should gather the materials and tools you will need.

The tools you will need for the job include:

  • A drill
  • Runners, posts, handrails, footguards, and all other components of your railing system
  • Silicone caulk & caulking gun
  • Deck screws
  • Tape measure
  • Carpenter’s pencil
  • Mitre saw with a diamond blade
  • Level
  • Safety equipment (safety glasses, high visibility vest, steel-toed boots, gloves, etc.)

How to Build Aluminum Deck Railings

  1. Set the First Post

Naturally, the first step for building your aluminum deck railings is to set the first post. We recommend starting with a corner or end section, so you have a clear point of reference. To set your post, simply place it in the right location and drill the lag bolts into place. For optimal results, you can use the silicone caulking on the first lag screw to seal it into place.

  1. Measure the Distance to the Next Post

During the second step, you will measure the distance to the next post. Remember, posts should never be more than 6 feet away from one another. Simply measure the distance and mark the location of the next area with your carpenter’s pencil. Then, install the post using the same process as the first step.

  1. Install the Pickets & Spacers

Next, it is time to install the pickets or glass sheeting. In both instances, the process is the same. First, clip the pickets into place and then insert a spacer to maintain an accurate distance between them. Continue this process until you reach the end of the railing section. Now, you may find that your final spacer is only a half-length compared to the rest. Cut it to length, and if you are feeling proud, remove the previous pickets and spacers to put the half-length in first. This will ensure a sturdy connection between the two sections, and it will also look more professional and complete.

  1. Connect the Post Sections

The final step is connecting the two posts together with your railing section. You will need to drill holes for the securements of the base rail and handrail to both posts and then screw them together. Afterwards, install any support clips on the base rail and secure them to the main decking structure.

  1. Repeat Steps 2-4

And there you have it-the complete process for installing aluminum deck railing. After the first section, you will continue the same steps in sequence for the remaining sections. If you have any questions or concerns, simply contact us by phone or email, and we will be happy to assist!
